Project Description

In Loving Memory of Keanu “Kiki” Paulino

Jan 25th, 2019 – May 24th, 2024

Keanu, affectionately known as Kiki, will always be a radiant presence in our family. Kiki’s beautiful, infectious smile and giggles brought joy to all he encountered, including his dedicated medical team at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine. At just 5 years old, he passed away after his courageous battle with Type 3 Pleuropulmonary Blastoma (PPB)/DICER1, a rare and aggressive childhood lung cancer, in which tumor developed in his left lung and within months disease metastasized to the brain. Along with being Kiki’s neurosurgeon, Dr. Mark Souweidane’s efforts in clinical and scientific research at Children’s Brain Tumor Project drove our decision in adding to Kiki’s legacy by donating his tumor tissue.

BREADCRUMBS

With the conclusion of 2025, I reflected on my previous essay, Purple Encounters. Full of questions. Even doubts if what I wrote was just a temporary bandage to get through year one? Do we still find refuge in Keanu’s favorite color, purple? Does it still symbolize his spirit watching over us? What could I take with me as we enter year two this May? Another round of birthdays, family outings and holidays came along, but Keanu was not here to blow out his candles, join in our family group hugs or take pictures that showcased his beautiful smile and personality...

What’s in a Name?

I learned Keanu is a Hawaiian name that means 'cool breeze over the mountains.' In Hawaiian culture, where nature holds deep significance, this name represents a refreshing and gentle force, evoking sentiments of tranquility and comfort which immediately transported me back to a family trip to Maui where we saw the sunrise from the summit of Haleakala volcano.

PURPLE ENCOUNTERS – KEANU’S KORNER

Grief is a snake that seeps in silently as it strikes. Although not venomous, its bite stings badly and pain heightened as we endure our first round of “the most wonderful time of the year” without our family being complete. We find refuge in Purple, Kiki’s favorite color and its symbolism of his spirit. Full of love, strength and good vibes - our family motto.
