The Children’s Brain Tumor Project Foundation Finds Success as an Official Charity Partner of the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon
NEW YORK, NY, November 6, 2022—For the first time as a newly branded nonprofit, the Children’s Brain Tumor Project Foundation (CBTPF) was named an official charity team in the TCS New York City Marathon. On Sunday, November 6, fourteen dedicated athletes proudly ran through all five-boroughs of New York City to honor children and families who have been impacted by a pediatric brain tumor diagnosis.
“Thank you for making it possible for us to be here for our niece, and celebrate and honor her with something so special,” said William Thompson, a runner on our team. “It was a dream come true.” William and his wife Nicola flew in from the UK to run the marathon in memory of their niece, Brooke, who passed away in 2019 after a ten-year battle.
The CBTPF awarded marathon entries to sixteen athletes who raised a combined total of $60,000 so far (two of our runners deferred to 2023 due to injury). The highest fundraiser on the team, Erin Brown, raised close to $7,000 in memory of Chase Balay, whose family has supported the Children’s Brain Tumor Project since 2013, and in memory of her father, who recently passed away from a Glioblastoma.
“I carried Chase and everyone else who’s been impacted with such tragedy with me. My dad, and his never-ending positive spirit, was with me,” said Erin.
Ironically, Chase’s brother, Ryder, attends Don Bosco Prep School and his mom spotted the JV hockey coach running for our team. It was so touching to both Chase’s mom and brother to see how far and wide this cause has touched people.
“It was an honor to run for this cause,” said coach Chris Moriera. “There were times throughout the race I had to dig deep but I kept thinking about what this funding means to families and it gave me the courage to keep going.”
The 2022 TCS New York City Marathon marked the race’s return to full capacity with 50,000 runners for the first time since 2019, and the CBTPF was among 500 official charity partners selected to provide runners the opportunity to run in the world’s most popular marathon.
Next up for Team CBTPF is the 2023 United Airlines NYC Half on Sunday, March 19, followed by the chance for another charity team in the 2023 TCS NYC Marathon. We hope you will consider running with us and sharing this form with your family and friends who might be interested, as well. The tremendous fundraising efforts of Team CBTPF directly support the pediatric brain tumor research of Dr. Mark Souweidane and Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield at Weill Cornell Medicine.
